Hi. I'm a high school sophmore at Milton Academy, and I play bass. Our jazz program takes a trip to South Africa every other year, and I discovered Afrobeat when I was listening to all the African music I could find before last years trip. The music was amazing to me: a perfect fusion of groove, jazz, freedom, funk, politics, raw energy, and spirit. I shared this music with my friends in the jazz program, and we want to start an Afrobeat Ensemble at our school. We have had a few jams already.
I'm writing to ask if there is sheet music for Fela, Tony Allen, or any of today's Afrobeat groups, online, or anywhere else. We have been playing by ear so far, so we are limited to the "simpler" songs like No Agreement, and Colonial Mentality. Specifically, we are looking for horn arangements, but any information, or advice for our endevour would be appreciated.
Thank you for doing what you guys do. I'm so glad the spirit of Fela lives on, and his message and method are not forgotten. Keep on groovin'

Your stuff is hot. Afrobeat funkified to the Nth power, that's how i will describe it. Jojo Kuo told me about his work with you guys about two years ago, but i didn't get to see him for about a year or so. Anyway, i ran into him about two weeks ago in NYC. I like to get hold of the "No Consideration" CD, espedcially, the "Mama Dont Want No Gun" and Mr. Sinister" mixes i hear on the site, so that i can kick them on our show, Fridays on WPAT 930 AM. I am really thrilled by the innovation and sophistication embedded in this music. I am a fan of fela kuti a major pioneer of afro beat, but I can say that kokolo has sucessfully taken afro beat to another level, fusing it with other music styles. the sky is the limit for this group.
